In a shocking declaration last week, North Carolina Representative Tricia Cotham formalized her party switch to the GOP. Cotham has run as a Democrat, and with Democrats, since her political debut in 2007. Prior to entering Politics, she served for a few years as a teacher and principal. Cotham spent 10 years as the representative of the North Carolina Assembly for District 100, 2007-2017. Mecklenburg, the area that Cotham represents, has historically been represented by Democrats for many years. 14 out of the other 16 representatives for the State House and State Senate that represent portions of Mecklenburg are Democrats as well.  The North Carolina Assembly GOP already has a huge majority, contrary to the Democratic Governor and the 50/50 split of US House members. Last week, the hotly-contested Equality Act came back under the purview of political officials. Conversations about the Equality Act, an extension of the 1964 Civil Rights Act, have been like a game of table tennis between Democrat and Republican officeholders. President Biden serves as the face of the pro-equality act team while the bill passes through the senate. Variations of the bill have been proposed since the 1970s to fill the gaps in the original Civil Rights Act, but none have been passed through the house until 2021. The 2021 passage was ignited by a SCOTUS case in 2020, where justices affirmed that discrimination based on sexuality or gender is illegal and unconstitutional. This concept is left unclear in the initial act, but, with the steady incline of individuals identifying as LGBTQ+, the distinction is necessary.   Kamala Harris is known to many as the first female Vice President of the United States. She is in the middle of her first term as Vice President alongside Joe Biden, the 46th President of the United States. Her motto is to do justice for the people, and she has committed to that throughout her life. She was an attorney, activist, and leader in California. Kyrsten Sinema, a new addition to the independents in Congress, has had a record of indecisiveness since beginning her senatorial term in 2019. Since 2004, Sinema had identified herself with the Democrats of Arizona. She has participated in Democratic caucuses and labeled herself as a Democrat, although her votes in the Senate were known to be some of the most conservative. Facing all of the backlash from peers in 2022, Sinema now officially identifies as an Independent, after winning her position with the tag of a Democrat.  Last week, news broke that the Silicon Valley Bank had failed. Housing much money from Silicon Valley tech startups, this failure has sent a shockwave across the country. Marianne Williamson is running for President in 2024. She's a 70-year-old Texan woman, who is bent on becoming the leader of our nation (Williamson 2023). I had to do some digging to find out what she's all about, and what I uncovered is much more information than I was receiving through tweets and Instagram slides.  Williamson has had a few attempts to enter the political world, but despite those, I've never heard of her. She has lost the few elections that she has participated in in the past, and she has never held political office (Fahner 2023). Dubbed, "The AOC of Gen Z," Olivia is outspoken and unafraid of standing up for what she believes in.
